DIRECTOR: CARLO GENNARELLI

During his 40-year career in television and film, Carlo Gennarelli has earned 14 Emmy Awards and 2 International Monitor Awards as both editor and producer. He has been involved with various TV programs for every major American television network and cable outlet. Highlighting his achievements are contributions to milestone programming such as “ABC News Nightline,” “Inside the Actor’s Studio,” “Monday Night Football,” and 9 Olympic Broadcasts, including Sarajevo, Yugoslavia (1984), Nagano, Japan (1998), and Torino, Italy (2006).

While continuing to contribute to the TV industry, as well as producing his own independent films, Carlo Gennarelli is also an Associate Professor at Hofstra University in New York, teaching classes in television production and studies.

His latest independent documentary feature, “Made by Immigrants (2022),” is an international award-winning film that has screened in both the United States and Italy. It is an autobiographical tale of an American son of Italian immigrants from the same small countryside town. As an adult, he discovers hidden documents, photos, and letters belonging to his deceased parents. These artifacts prove to be a revelation that prompts him to investigate his genetic roots. By doing this, a new and unexpected world opens up, exposing the complex saga of immigration in America.

Upon screening “Made by Immigrants” Italian film historian Ciro Borrelli noted, “Carlo Gennarelli’s documentary is wonderful. An excellent mix between his family history and the migratory flows during the first half of the twentieth century. It is also an intense love story, born in Italy just emerging from the rubble of the Second World War and spanning its reach beyond the vast Atlantic Ocean.” The film’s audiences, both in Italy and America, have been moved by this film’s search for self-discovery, and they have identified with its global themes of ancestry and immigration.
